Daria Drawing

15.2 × 21.5 cm | 6 × 8.5 in

Materials: Paper, graphite, colored pencil.

Made as a gift for a friend, this portrait was inspired by 1) a deceased parrot and 2) a drawing from James Edward Deeds. I’ve long been an admirer of Deeds’ work, but the idea for this came after seeing one of his original drawings in Paris. That piece featured a woman in a feathery hat which made me think of a bird… I was brainstorming ideas for Daria’s birthday gift at the time – so the concept to make her a portrait wearing her dead bird as a hat was the obvious direction.
