YOU DON’T NEED A WEATHER VANE TO KNOW WHICH WAY THE WIND BLOWS
These small-scale sculptures depict simple houses, barns, churches, & warehouses that all feature ostentatious weather vanes. The structures are reduced to cartoonish renderings, with only minimal walls, windows, doors, and roofs, but their small scale creates a feeling of intricacy and intimacy. The interiors are dark & empty, while the outsides are often brightly colored. Their perspectives & proportions are skewed, and they are slightly raised as to appear to float above the ground. The absence of humans or life is glaring, and both the interiors and surroundings are completely ignored. The viewer’s entire focus is on the shapes, facades, and absurdly large weather vanes – bygone functional decorations that add to the meanings and contexts of the buildings.
